I have been thinking of Larry quite a bit lately. What a positive, upbeat person, as a teacher, but in my case I am thinking of him as a ballplayer.

So sorry to hear of Mr. Balog's passing. Although I moved from Weyburn in 1971, I was grateful to have been given the opportunity to learn a variety of instruments under his tutelage. I especially remember one time when the Parent Council had purchased an oboe just one week prior to a concert. Of course, the Parent Council expected it to be played in that concert, so Mr. Balog gave me the task of learning to play the oboe. With only one week's playing, I'm sure it must have sounded horrible, but Mr. Balog still was gracious and thanked me for taking the time to learn it.

We are going to miss our dear dedicated Rider fan neighbor! We had so much fun sitting next to you and Larry over the years and will miss him so much! I was so excited to learn my Weyburn band teacher was sitting next to us at Rider games. Larry was a great individual and was passionate in all aspects of his life! You will not know me but Larry was my cousin on my Dad's side of the family. (He was 20 days younger than myself). When we were kids he was a favorite cousin but I only saw him once since I left home..............sorry to say that because it sounds like he was a great fellow!! We were so saddened to read of Larry’s passing. We were not aware of him being ill. We have many great memories of the wonderful fun we had going to dances, old timers hockey events, etc. Larry was always ready to sub at WCS when I called. Great contributor to the awesome music program in Weyburn. Know you are in our thoughts and prayers - celebrate his life because he has left a wonderful legacy.

Mr. Balog was one of the best teachers I had in school. He never looked down on you as a student. Always willing to help every student and took the time for each of his students. My favorite teacher. I consider myself privileged to have had Mr. B as a music instructor for 5 years, and then to be able to play in an adult band that he was conducting. When I think back to the band trips we took some 40 plus years ago, and the stories and jokes that came about from them it was always fun, and then to carry that fun on even after graduation in other music groups when time permitted is something I remember fondly. He took the time to know his students and gave us lots of encouragement to try and carry on with our music as much as possible. Many fond memories of band practice from not knowing which end of an instrument to blow into, to still playing for special occasions. Whenever I would meet him, whether it be at hockey games, football game or just on the street he would always smile, and take the time to talk.
Sad to hear of his passing, but thinking he is in a better place with no pain.

It was with great sadness I read of the passing of Mr Balog. He was one of my favorite teachers when I attended the Junior High. I will always remember his love of music and I admired his perseverance in successfully teaching a group of awkward teens to not only play their instruments well, but to do so while marching in the Weyburn parade. His dedication and selfless time invested was rewarded by heavily populated streets on parade day cheering and applauding the band! Mr Balog made a good impression on many kids that went through the school system.
I hope fond memories will bring a measure of comfort to his family at this difficult time.
