Welcome to the memorial page for

Mildred Delrose Johnston

April 17, 2017

Mildred Delrose Johnston (nee Oliver) passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, April 17, 2017 at the age of 88.

Mildred was predeceased by her husband of 34 years, Norman Johnston; her parents Delois and Mabel Oliver (nee Johnson); brother-in-law William (Billy) Shorthouse, and son-in-law Daryl MacMillan.

Mildred is survived by her sister Marion Shorthouse  (nee Oliver), sons: Larry (Joan Campana), Carman (Corey Sigurdson), daughters: Lois (Brian Shewan), Donna,  Darlene (Morley Giroux), grandchildren: Danielle (Donovan), Alex (Brittany), Melissa (Mike), Jennifer (Gaurav), Monica (Phillip), April (Tanner), Crystal (Adam) and Bryce; great-grandchildren: Austin, Johnny, Zach, Ella, Bodhi and Lane.

Mildred has born April 8, 1929 on the family farm near Tribune, SK. After completing Normal School in Moose Jaw she took a teaching position at South Arcola, SK in 1951. There she met the love of her life, Norman Johnston. She resigned her teaching position at the end of the school year and they were married November 4, 1952. They took over the family farm near Kisbey, where they farmed and raised their family until Norman’s failing health meant leaving the farm. They moved to Weyburn SK in 1975. There Mildred got a job at the Weyburn Special Care Nursing Home, where she worked until retiring in 1993. In 2015 as her health was failing somewhat, Mildred moved to the Marian Chateau retirement residence in Regina where she thrived until her passing.

Mildred was a very avid gardener. She tended a large vegetable garden at the farm and always had a front yard full of flowers. She continued this in Weyburn where most of her backyard was transformed into gardens. She was also an excellent seamstress. In addition to sewing clothes for her family, she made many quilts and stuffed toys for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mildred was very active in the Grace United Church in Weyburn where she was on the Board for many years and also organized many fundraising projects.

One of her greatest joys was getting her whole family together. These events she orchestrated whenever she had a chance, most recently from her hospital bed this Easter weekend.

A Service of Remembrance for Mildred was held on Monday, April 24, 2017 at 11:00am from the Grace United Church, Weyburn, SK with Rev. M. Barnabas officiating.  Honorary Pallbearers were all in attendance.  Lunch was held at the Upper Grace Hall, Weyburn, SK.  Interment followed at Green Acres Memorial Gardens, Weyburn, SK.
