Ying Lee Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ying Kien Lee, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left us on January 3, 2025.  Ying was a man of many incredible talents. He was 81 years old.

He was predeceased by his parents, Tsun Art Lee and Nguyen Lee; his siblings: Ken Lee, Susan Wong and Xin Guan Li.

Ying is survived by his wife Sue Lee (Weyburn, SK); his children: Sarah (Doug) Cochrane (Regina, SK), Sandy Lee (Regina, SK), Mon Lee (Regina, SK), Jeff Lee (Weyburn, SK) and Sherrice Lee (Regina, SK); grandchildren: Tianna Cochrane, Alexander Cochrane, Ethan Cochrane, Ananda Lee-Son and Max Lee-Son,Ying is also survived by his siblings: Toy Ping Loi (Boston, USA), Mee Fong Cheung (Boston, USA), Yee Gong Lee (Boston, USA).

Ying was born in Toishan, China and later made his home in Weyburn, where he built a life full of love, joy and amazing food. 

He was a dedicated husband to Sue Lee and a devoted father to his five children: Sarah (Doug) Cochrane, Sandy Lee, Mon Lee, Jeff Lee, and Sherrice Lee, all of Regina. His love extended to his grandchildren, Tianna Cochrane, Alexander Cochrane, Ethan Cochrane, Ananda Lee-Son, and Max Lee-Son, who were the light of his life.

Ying was a gifted cook and baker, and his culinary skills brought comfort and happiness to all who were fortunate enough to taste his creations. He shared his culinary talents at Knotty Pine with his brother, Ken and then with his cousin, Jack, at Club Cafe.  His Chinese Canadian food brought people together and created lasting memories around amazing Asian food.

After retirement, he took his talents to new heights with his baking and traditional authentic Chinese recipes.  His Chinese barbecue pork buns and hotpot became legendary in the family, a recipe that will forever be remembered and cherished. In his kitchen, Ying demonstrated not only his love for food, but also for the people he shared it with.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to everyone for their support and love during this difficult time. A Service will be held in celebration of Ying’s life, his culinary gifts, and the countless ways he touched the lives of those around him.

Ying Kien’s legacy of warmth, generosity, and delicious meals will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

Rest in peace, Ying Kien. Your love and your legendary cooking will always be remembered.

A Celebration of Life was held on Monday, January 13, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. from RD Family Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, SK.  Pallbearers were: Doug Cochrane, Alexander Cochrane, Michael Lee, Alan Lee, Rob Hein and Robert Lee.  Interment was held at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn, SK.
