Goodbye Mom
Mom was born in Drumheller, Alberta on September 29, 1934. She attended boarding schools in Calgary & Edmonton. She spent a lot of time with her Aunt Virgie while in Edmonton. It was at school she learned the value of hard work. And to do things right the first time to avoid having to do them over again. And to eat everything on her plate~except cantaloupe!! She just could NOT stand it!!!
Following her schooling, Mom worked on a dairy farm. The cows were always to be left in the barn overnight. But one time when the parents were away, the oldest boy decided to let them out into the pasture because he didn’t want to feed them. Mom told him he would get in trouble, but he never did. Because later that evening the barn burnt down. Mom also worked for a Jewish family. She always said that was quite an experience. Having to remember what pots to use to cook what in. She also worked for a time in the baby unit at the old Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton.
Mom met Dad in Edmonton through a friend of hers. And it was love at first sight. They were married July 6, 1954 in Weyburn in the original St. Vincent de Paul Church.
They lived in Edmonton where Dad worked as a trucker hauling oil rigs in the Peace River area. Mom thought she would like to go along on a trip with him once. But changed her mind at the last minute. She always said it was a good thing as a planned 3-day trip turned into 3 weeks.
On September 29, 1955, Mom’s 21st birthday, Debbie was born. They continued to live in Edmonton until 1958. Dad then decided to move back to Saskatchewan to work for his Uncle John Vogel doing the farm work. It was here that Mike was added to the family.
Then because most of the farming was done west of McTaggart, Mom & Dad moved to a farm in the area. Mom set up housekeeping & raising us kids. The rest of the family was added while living here ~ Helen, Richard, Teresa & Peter. And an endless parade of pets~dogs, cats, horses, cows (yes, we had a pet milk cow-Rosie), Mike’s goose & a pet pig-Arnold. And there were a few chickens thrown in at one time.
Dad also farmed his own land, so Mom took many a meal to the field during harvest time. In later years, Mom, Dad & Pete moved into Weyburn. Mom loved it in town. She was close to the store when it was grocery time. No more fighting the rutty or wet roads to get to the highway.
She started bowling while at the farm & continued after they moved into town. She competed in many Provincial tournaments over the years in Regina, Saskatoon & Prince Albert. She got Debbie, Helen & Teresa into it, too. Mom & Deb, as well as Mom & Teresa competed together on provincial teams. She was proud to share this experience with them.
Growing up, all of us kids played baseball. Mom was our #1 scorekeeper for every game!! As well we took swimming lessons & Teresa did synchronized swimming as well. Mom was the biggest cheerleader for us as well as the grandkids & great-grand kids at their hockey games.
Mom worked for a time at the Bay & Zellers restaurants as a cook. Our Mom was an amazing cook.
Mom loved having holiday meals with family & friends over to enjoy the food & have a visit. Or play cards. And bingo was also a passion for her.
She also worked for Safety Vic Inc. ~ owned by Dad’s cousin Victor & Cheryl Vogel ~ cleaning the safety trailers.
She loved all her grandchildren, great-grandchildren & great-great grandchildren & spoiled them with treats.
The one thing she made sure of was that we all knew that she loved each and every one of us equally in her own way.
Love you, Mom. Enjoy your eternity with Dad, Helen, Landon & Tyson. You’ve earned it. We will miss you.
