Rodney Earl McLeod was born on October 16, 1951, the eldest child of Hilda and Murdock. His younger years consisted of school in Colgate and Goodwater, and working at his parents store in Maxim. After high school he attended university. He was always learning new skills which he would use throughout his life. Through taking courses such as welding and AI, and learning many things on his own, he became a “Jack of all trades”. During the summers he was employed with PFRA which gave him the knowledge to build the perfect fence… always.
Rodney found his true passion in life when he started farming with his Dad and brother Wayne. Between them and with helping hands from the family, they built and operated a very successful cattle and mixed farming operation.
In 1994, Rod met the love of his life, Val. They were blessed with over 29 happy years of marriage. He treated Val’s family as his own and always made time for Val’s boys and his grandkids. Because of his kindness, sense of humour and positive outlook, his nieces and nephews had a special relationship with him.
Rod loved people. Many hours were spent on the phone or around the kitchen table sharing stories and reminiscing.
Once the cattle herd was sold, Rod and Val started going south to Arizona and enjoyed many seasons there, making life long friends and creating countless memories. But of course, you can never take the farmer out of the farm, and he continued helping on the farm until he was no longer able to.
Rod’s brief battle with cancer was handled with incredible grace, dignity and courage. It didn’t change an ounce of his character. Rod would share a joke, a smile and say “it is what it is”.
Farming with his family was the biggest joy and his proudest life accomplishment. In Rod’s own words… “I’ve been a farmer all of my life… And I loved every minute of it.”
