Margaret Lukey Obituary

Margaret Isabelle Lukey, late of Weyburn SK passed away on July 15, 2024, at the age of 93.

Margaret was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Mossie Boyle; her husband Paul Lukey;  her grandson, Joel Dennis; brothers: Stuart (Margie), Graham (Dorothy) and Keith (Lorraine) Boyle; and her brothers and sisters-in-law.

She is survived by: her daughter Isabelle (Russ) Dennis, and their daughter Sharie (Garth) Gross, and grandchildren, Hanna (Levi), Ryley, and Emily; her son, Kevin (Deanna) Lukey, and their children, Kyle and Kendal (Matt) Williams and grandchildren, Paxton, Luke and Avery; daughter Lori Lukey (Gord Hetherington); daughter Joyce (Kevin) Smith, and their children, Kelti and Brenna; as well as nieces, nephews and special friends.

Margaret (aka) Mum, was born and raised on a farm outside Colgate.  She moved to Trossachs area shortly after graduating High School in Regina, and Normal School in Moose Jaw.  Here she met the love of her life, Paul Lukey.  They were married in 1954 and made Trossachs their home for many many years.

Mum’s life from beginning to end was lived to the fullest and, for the most part, on her terms. She loved her family, her extended family, her self-proclaimed adopted family, her church, and her community whole heartedly. Trossachs was always home and the people there were her true friends. However, following her move to Weyburn she discovered that you can have two homes, and added more true friends.

She was an educator and life long learner. First as a school teacher, then as her children arrived she turned to new roles of mum, teacher of Sunday school, and long standing 4-H leader. She touched the lives of many forming lifelong friends through both 4-H and the church.

There was never a time when Mum’s faith waivered. She was an active member of the United Church of Canada. Over 60 years she served her church in several capacities, including having her voice heard at National General Council. Locally, provincially, and nationally she gave her time to what she believed.

In 2014 Mum was awarded the “Quota Club Women of the Year Community Service Award”, which was a great honour.

Mum loved to entertain. Our home was often filled to the brim with company. She loved to have all ages around. Every occasion was a chance for celebration. Birthdays were especially important. She made sure they were celebrated regardless what else was going on around us. Of course, there was always a card game thrown in for good measure. She loved her card games… especially Gin Rummy.

She supported our various sporting endeavors, travelling many miles watching first her kids, then her grandkids, and finally her great grandkids, loving every minute of it.

Mom loved to read, sew, square dance and was a member of the Variations Choir for several years. She was also known for her ability to knit and attend meetings, knit and watch sporting events, knit and travel (in the passenger’s seat - thank goodness), knit and watch TV, knit and visit. It seemed Mum almost always was accompanied by a knitting bag and a good book.

She will be greatly missed, but she had a full and active life. Mum was full of spunk and wit, love and laughter, kindness and generosity, and maybe just a tiny bit of Irish stubbornness.

Forever loved and missed.
