Hildegard Schouten Obituary

Hildegard Ingeborg Schouten, late of Weyburn, SK passed away October 13, 2018 at the age of 98 years.

Hilde was predeceased by her parents Hermann and Ida Schulze; brothers Franz Schulze and Horst Schulze; her husband Edward Schouten; daughter Ingrid Benning; great grandson Cody Benning; 6 sisters-in-law and 1 brother-in-law.

Hilde is survived by son-in-law and daughter-in-law, Clifton and Dorothy Benning; grandchildren: Terry (Shaunna) Benning, Gordon (Lorretta) Benning and Karla (Noel) Grisdale; 10 great grandchildren; nephews, nieces and cousins in Germany.

Hildegard Schouten was born January 13, 1920 in Cottbus, Germany, the middle child of Hermann and Ida Schulze.  In 1941, Hilde married Albert Freifsler and they had one daughter Ingrid.  When Ingrid was 3 years old, Hilde and her daughter went to Hanover, Germany.  While working there, she met Edward Schouten from Raymond, SK.  Ed had served in World War II, but had returned to Germany for peacekeeping.  They were married and that fall, along with Hilde's daughter Ingrid, they came to Canada and settled in Regina, SK.

Hilde worked at housecleaning jobs for many years, and following Ed's retirement they moved to Regina Beach.  Eventually they returned to Regina.

At their home there was always a pot of coffee brewed and her morning routine was to get up at 5:00 a.m., enjoy her coffee and read the Leader Post.  She loved to bowl and was very proud to tell everyone that she had bowled for 49 years.  When her grandchildren were young, she knit many sweaters, toques and scarves.  She also crocheted afghans.  She loved their dog Benji. She loved to drive, and every day went out to get groceries, lottery tickets, or go to garage sales.

Following her husband's death in 2012, she remained in her home for one year.  Due to failing health, she was admitted to Parkside Nursing Home in Regina and later transferred to Tatagwa View in Weyburn to be closer to family. She enjoyed her last four and half years with the wonderful care provided by the staff.  Hilde passed away peacefully on October 13, 2018.
