Helen Mary Szwetz, late of Weyburn, SK passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 16, 2022, at the Weyburn General Hospital at the age of 86 years, with daughter Teresa by her side.
Helen was born in Weyburn, SK on September 30, 1935.
Helen was predeceased by her parents, Nicholas and Katherine Metchuk; her husband Ilko (Alex) Szwetz; siblings: Rosalia, Joe and Jack Metchuk.
Helen is survived by her children: Barbara (Andrew) Hutyra and family: Nicole (Jay), David and his daughter Isabella; Teresa (Alan) Lee and family: Brian (Tanya), Chris (Michael), Robert (Nicole); Linda Audette and family: Matthew (Kailey), Jennifer (Kris), Shaelyn (Ben), Steven (Leanna) Szwetz and their daughter Jayda; Kevin (Byllie-Rae) Szwetz and family Bayle and Mikaela; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.
On July 8, 1961 she married Ilko (Alex) and together they raised their five children.
She worked at the Royal Bank and then various Motor Licence Offices in Weyburn, retiring in 1995.
At 18 years of age, she competed in the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver. She placed 2nd in Canada and 4th in the Empire for Women’s Discus Throw; as well as 4th in Canada and 9th in the Empire for Women’s Shot Put.
In 2011, she was the Women of the Year recipient of the Quota International of Weyburn Community Service Award.
She enjoyed time with family and friends, going out for coffee, doing word search puzzles, cheering for the Weyburn Red Wings for many years, camping and attending Ukrainian Festivals in Dauphin, MB and Vegreville, AB.
Visitation was held Thursday, January 27, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. from RD Family Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, SK.
A Private Family Funeral Service was held with Rev. Fr. Warren Dungen officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn, SK.
