Gerald Douglas Dionne, late of Weyburn, SK, passed away on May 29, 2021 at the age of 77 years.
He was predeceased by his father and mother, Victor and Olive Dionne; infant sister Beatrice Dionne; brother Oliver Dionne; as well as many uncles, aunts, cousins, relatives and in-laws.
Gerry is survived by his wife Annette Dionne; his children: Duane (Tammy) Dionne, James Dionne (Sandra Veer), Elise Selby (Mark Girardin) and Tim Dionne; grandchildren: Bailey Dionne (Dylan Kvamme), Chandler Dionne (Talisha Rogers), Danica Dionne (Branden Smith), Jana (Mike) Tzanakos, Aaron Dionne (Kim Mabee), Paul Dionne, Kris (Chloe) Frisk, Rylan Girardin (Jess Smith), Brett (Morgan) Selby, Celine Selby (Wyatt Arndt); great grandchildren: Axton, Zavery, Zerek, Zsofia, Crimson, Bowdyn, Zeke and Jamie; his brother Dennis (Sylvia) Dionne; sister Constance (Ted) Gosling; sister-in-law Judy Dionne; brother and sister-in-law, Walter (Bernadette) Niemegeers; as well as many close cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and friends.
Gerry was born April 8, 1944 at Mount St. Mary’s Hospital in Weyburn, SK. He was raised on the family farm north of Neptune or west of Colgate by his parents, Vic and Olive Dionne along with his siblings: Oliver, Dennis and Constance. He attended school in Neptune and Colgate. In his younger years, as a farm boy, Gerry would raise chickens with his mother so he could have some spending money. He also worked in Colgate for Arnold and Ethel King at “King’s Store” stocking the shelves.
He furthered his education in the Royal Canadian Air Force under radar and communication/ electrical. His rank was Aircraftsman. Gerry then took the opportunity to join SaskTel Communications where he was employed for 33 years.
Gerry first met the love of his life, Annette Niemegeers, while driving down the street where she caught his eye. Their first date was to a dance in Ceylon, SK. The two of them decided to marry on August 21, 1965 in the Holy Family Catholic Church at Radville, SK presided by Father. N. Marcotte. Together, living in Weyburn, SK, they raised a family of four children: Duane, James, Elise and Tim.
Gerry loved his sports, whether playing them, being a fan, or watching them on TV. This included baseball, which he played in Colgate, as a kid and upon moving to Weyburn, he played for the Royals. He spent most of his time as a father and later as a grandfather attending all the children’s and grandchildren’s sporting activities throughout their school years. Grandpa also enjoyed the school concerts, music festivals, dance recitals and any other activity that the grandkids were involved in. He was always proud of them all!
Living all his life in the community of Weyburn, Gerry was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Weyburn Branch #47, a member of the Knights of Columbus Weyburn Council #1731 and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, where along with his wife Annette, were marriage councilors for several years.
He enjoyed volunteering as a cameraman at the local United Way Communithon. He was proud of the community in which he lived and attended as many events as possible, which included school events, sporting events, music festivals, rodeos. Gerry was a fan of the Weyburn Red Wings and Weyburn Beavers.
Gerry passed away with his wife, Annette by his side on May 29, 2021 at Tatagwa View in Weyburn.
The Dionne family would like to thank the staff of House 7 and House 4 at Tatagwa View for their compassionate care and kindness given to Gerry during the time he resided there.
Prayers were held Sunday June 6, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. from the McKenna Hall, Weyburn, SK.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, June 7, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. from the McKenna Hall, Weyburn, SK with Fr. Francis Plaparampil celebrant. Honour Guard were the Royal Canadian Legion Weyburn Branch #47. Honorary Pallbearers were the Sasktel Pioneers and the Knights of Columbus Council #1731. Pallbearers were: Rylan Girardin, Chandler Dionne, Brett Selby, Paul Dionne, Kirby Dionne and Axton Dionne. Interment will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn, SK at a later date.
Due to Covid 19 restrictions, we all must abide by the province of Saskatchewan’s restrictions on public gatherings by limiting the number of people attending the service to 90 people.
