Ernest John MacDonald, late of Weyburn, SK passed away on November 23, 2023 at the age of 85 years.
He was predeceased by his parents Andrew and Mabel MacDonald; father and mother-in-law Max and Lydia Elgie; his grandson Colin MacDonald; and brother-in-law Douglas Elgie.
Ernie is survived by his wife Marion; daughter Christine MacDonald (Rick Ursu) and children:Skylar, Brynn, Daxton; son Blaine MacDonald (Stacy) and daughter Brit; daughter Keri McEleney (Mike) and children: Victoria, Robert, Lee, Jeremy; great-grandchildren Kurtis and Louis; his brother Orville MacDonald (Pat); sisters-in-law: Maxine (Peter) Hatton, Myrna (Reid) Stabenow-Thompson, Margaret Elgie, Monica (Merel) Ruszkowski, Marie Jeffrey; as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins.
Ernie was born on October 17, 1938 on the family farm near Saltcoats, SK. He was raised at Weekes, SK. He became a teacher, first teaching at Hudson Bay Composite School.
He met and married Marion and started their family. They moved to Weyburn where Ernie taught math at Weyburn Comprehensive. Two more children were added to their family, and he became vice-principal for eight years while still teaching math.
Ernie enjoyed many things in life: coaching high school, curling and minor ball; and participating in curling, baseball, soft ball and golf. Ernie loved camping, playing cards, fishing and dancing. He was an incredible woodworker and loved making intarsia pictures.
Ernie loved family and friends who have known him to be very patient and kind. He always tried to be a problem solver not only in math but by listening to students and people. He was a positive influence on many who loved and respected him.
Visitation was held on December 4, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. from RD Family Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, SK.
A Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. from Grace United Church, Weyburn, SK with Rev. M. Barnabas officiating. Interment took place at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn, SK. Honorary Pallbearers were Ernie’s great grandchildren, Kurtis and Louis Jernie. Pallbearers were Ernie’s grandchildren: Victoria, Robert, Lee, Skylar, Brynn, Daxton and Brit. Honor Guard was the 5th Weyburn Scouts. Luncheon followed at the Royal Canadian Legion. 150 ~ 3rd Street, Weyburn, SK.
The family wishes to thank the amazing staff at RD Family Funeral Chapel and Grace United Church as well as the Royal Canadian Legion for making such a difficult situation much easier to handle. We also want to give a heartfelt thank you to the family members and wonderful friends and former students who reached out with wishes, visits and donations. We love you all.
