Edith Mildred (Scharnatta) Jacobs, wife of the late Gordon Jacobs, passed away in Weyburn, SK on February 22, 2026, just three weeks shy of her 102nd birthday.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon; parents, William and Lena; her siblings: Charles, Orville, Faye and Edward; son-in-law, Mark Sandilands; as well as in-laws and extended family on both the Scharnatta and Jacobs side. 

Edith is survived by her children: Diane, Allan (Melanie) and Leona; three grandchildren: Ben Ferchuk, Tanner Jacobs, Scotia Jacobs (Vidal Boren); great-grandchild, Enzo Jacobs Boren. In addition to immediate family, she is survived by nieces and nephews on both the Scharnatta and Jacobs sides of the family; her close cousin, Lillian (Meyers) Heibein; and her sister-in-law, Alice (Krueger) Scharnatta.

Edith was born on March 17, 1924, on the farm (SW-13-6-11-W2) of William Charles and Lena Marceline (Baudria) Scharnatta, near Midale, SK. She was the first-born child of William’s second family, little sister to her older half brothers, Charles and Orville, and big sister to Faye and Edward.

Edith attended Augusta School #2607 until it closed.  She continued her schooling at Anderson School #2694 and took her Grade 11 at Estevan Collegiate but instead of completing her Grade 12, she attended Success Business College in Regina where she learned bookkeeping skills that proved handy her whole life. 

In summer 1949, sister Faye introduced Edithto Gordon. After a whirlwind courtship, Edith and Gordon were married on November 15, 1949, and Edith moved to Gordon’s farm just west of Trossachs, SK.  Here they raised their children: Diane, Allan, and Leona. In 1994, Gordon decided to “cash out”. Gordon and Edith retired to Weyburn.  Unfortunately, Gordon’s health deteriorated; he died in 2000. 

In 2001, Edith sold the house in Weyburn and settled into a seniors’ condo.  The condo inhabitants fostered their own close community.  Edith aged well in that environment.  However, the prolonged isolation imposed by the COVID pandemic took a toll on Edith’s confidence living alone.  In 2020, Edith sold her condo and moved into the Parkway Lodge, a supportive living facility in Weyburn, where she resided until her death.

Edith always had a garden, even on her condo’s balcony. She sewed clothes for the family. She knit, she crocheted, she did needlepoint and counted cross-stitch, all to perfection.  She loved to cook and bake. She sang. She square-danced. Along the way, she had various home-based businesses, most memorably selling Lifetime cookware which earned her and Gordon a trip to the Bahamas in the late 1970s. And, as she turned 100 years old, she finished writing her memoir which was published in 2025.

Edith was involved in the many aspects of community, most notably serving into her 90s as treasurer for the Trossachs chapter of the Saskatchewan Homemakers

Club and its successor, the Women’s Institute, and that group’s local successor, the Town and Country Women. She also took pride in having started, along with her good friend, Margaret Lukey, the 4-H Homecraft Club focused on mentoring local girls and boys in domestic life skills such as cooking, baking, sewing, etc.

Edith had extraordinary luck. She always entered contests and very often won.  Along the way, she won at least two televisions and one time she won shoes for the family. In her retirement, Edith loved to play card games with her condo community and going to the casino was one of her favourite things to do.  It is no wonder that she lived a vital and aware life for almost 102 years.

A Graveside Ceremony will be held on Friday, May 29, 2026 at 11:30 a.m. at Green Acres Memorials Gardens Cemetery, Hwy #39, Weyburn, SK with celebrant Fr. Frances Hengen. 

A Celebration of Life will follow at 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Wheatland Senior Centre, 888 ~ 1st Avenue NE, Weyburn, SK.

An open-mic format will be used and family and friends are invited to share memories of Edith.

Many thanks to the staff of the Parkway Lodge in Weyburn, SK for their care of Edith these last five and a half years and especially during the last few months as she declined in health.
