Edgar will be lovingly remembered by his son, David (Pat) May of Weyburn, SK and their children, Lisa (Nolan) and great grandsons, Sawyer and Holden, Marla (Dan) and great grandson, Beckett, Jeff (Shayla); son, Bill (Karen) May of Chestermere, AB and their sons, Liam (Deidre) and Alex; daughter, Cheryl (Miles) Thorson of Medicine Hat, AB and their daughter, Meagan (Melissa); sister in law, Joan Jamison and her son Jeff (Elaine) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Edgar is predeceased by his wife Enid and daughters Lois Ann and Baby Enid; his parents Wm Sheridan & Rita, brother Robert (Lorna) May and sister Alice (Earl) McAuley; Enid’s parents Albert & Emily Reddish and her siblings Lois and Jimmy.

Edgar and Enid met in Weyburn and dated for a few years before getting married in 1949.  They began their life together farming at Colfax and where they lived when Lois Ann then David were born.  They suffered great sorrow when Lois Ann became ill then died of leukemia at age four.  Edgar & Enid moved to the home farm NE of Weyburn and continued their farming life.  Tragedy struck again when Enid suffered a ruptured appendix while carrying Baby Enid and had emergency surgery but Baby Enid passed away just hours after birth.  A few years later Bill was born and then Cheryl.

Edgar was born in Weyburn, grew up on the original homestead and attended Killean School then Weyburn Collegiate Institute.  Farming was his chosen occupation, and he was a farmer for his entire life.  He worked hard to increase the land holdings and even more proud when David officially joined the operation.  He was most proud to have 3, when Jeff joined, generations working together.

In addition to the grain operation, Edgar was very interested in livestock and the challenge of improving the genetics of his stock.  In 1959 he acquired three elite gilts of the newly established Lacombe breed. The swine enterprise was liquidated in 1972.  While growing up Edgar raised Shorthorn cattle and in 1959 started a Hereford herd then switched to Polled Herefords.  We children exhibited cattle at 4-H shows and fairs in SK & MB plus Agribition in Regina.  His successful herd improvement was recognized over many years of showing cattle and culminated with Lollipop being named Senior Calf Champion at Agribition in 1984.

Farming life did not really allow for much vacation time.  After the children were grown and on their own, trips to visit Joan became an annual thing.  Like Enid, Edgar preferred the Florida locations.  They would arrive to find a “maintenance to do list” for Edgar but it was an opportunity to watch Blue Jays training camp practises and games.

Edgar was always interested in activities in which the grandchildren were involved.  He and Enid were very committed to getting the Weyburn grandkids to their various games.  While he understood hockey, he had to study basketball to figure that sport out.  He always enjoyed watching the music, band, and drama performances of the Alberta grandkids.

In Edgar’s 98 years, he lived through some of the most significant impacts and transformative changes of the last hundred years.  He was hardworking and steady and loved being a farmer.  He loved his family, both immediate and extended, and was proud of his children and all that his children and grandchildren accomplished.  That steadfastness is something we can all take to heart.
