Earl Thomson Obituary

Earl George Thomson, late of Weyburn, SK, passed away Sunday, January 3, 2021 at the age of 93 years.

He was predeceased by his parents Alexander and Annie Thomson; brothers, Ralph and Ronald; and his sisters, Dorothy and Olive.

Earl will be sadly missed by his wife, Thelma Thomson; son, Robert Thomson and his children: Justin (Kaila) Thomson and their family [Nina, Astrid, Imogen and Tilda], Nichol Thomson, Samantha Thomson; his daughter, Joanne Thomson; brother, Richard (Doreen); sisters: Thelma, Viola and Rosalie (Roy); sisters-in-law, Marjorie Thomson and Marian Tompkins; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Earl was born in Tugaske, Saskatchewan to Annie and Alex Thomson on September 11, 1927.  The family moved to Hazel Dell when Earl was three. Earl had many fond memories of growing up in Hazel Dell with his brothers, sisters and close family friends.

Earl left home at the age of 16 to work on his grandparents’ farm near Moose Jaw.  During the winter months Earl worked in Moose Jaw at a fruit packing plant and then retreading tires at a local garage.  Not long after that, Earl discovered operating heavy machinery was his life’s work. A favourite job was one of his first, helping to build the railroad from Sheridan to Lynn Lake, Manitoba.  Following the completion of that adventure, he moved where the work took him.  Eventually, he and Thelma settled in southern Saskatchewan.  Earl started his own road construction company which included a later partnership with his son, Bob.  They enjoyed many years building road and digging dugouts, along with many other ventures, before culminating in a grain hauling business from which Earl retired.  He worked far longer than most because to him, working was a hobby.

Although Earl’s health declined over the last several years, there was nothing he enjoyed more than a cup of tea and an opportunity to share his stories with family and close friends.

The family would like to sincerely and graciously thank the staff at the Weyburn Special Care Home for the care and compassion they provided Earl during his stay with them.

A Private Family Graveside Memorial Service was held Friday, January 8, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. from Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn, SK with funeral celebrant, Judy Beck. Urn Bearer was Justin Thomson.

Due to Covid 19 restrictions, we all must abide by the province of Saskatchewan’s restrictions on public gatherings by limiting the number of people attending the service to 30 people

For family and friends so wishing, charitable donations in memory of Earl may be made to the Weyburn Humane Society, P.O. Box 1062, Weyburn, SK, S4H 2L3 or to a charity of your choice.
