Donald Clay Von Sprecken    May 17, 1947 – June 4, 2026

It is with deep sadness that the family of Donald Clay Von Sprecken announces his passing.

Don was born on the family farm in Fillmore on May 17, 1947, to John and Audrey Von Sprecken, who predeceased him.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years, Liz Von Sprecken (née MacPherson), and their three children and eight grandchildren: Sheri Summers (Donnie) of Montmartre and children Michaela (Zakk), Mitchell (Caleigh), and Mathew (Tianna); Curtis Von Sprecken (Jennifer) of Benson and children Alex (Kristyn), Shaun, and Olivia; and Cindy Burrows (Greg) of Calgary and children Caleb (Sophia) and Myah.

Don is also survived by his sister Judy (Norm) Riddell of Carlyle and his brother Gary (Irene) Von Sprecken of Edmonton. He also leaves behind sister-in-law Margret Faltenhine of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Bill (Shirley) MacPherson of Olds, Alberta, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Don completed his schooling in Fillmore before joining the Royal Canadian Navy, where he proudly served for eight years. He was stationed in Halifax, where he served aboard the HMCS Nipigon as a ship’s diver and weapons technician. During his time in Halifax, Don met and married the love of his life, Liz. He was later transferred to Victoria, British Columbia, where he served aboard the HMCS Columbia. Eventually, Don and Liz returned to the family farm south of Fillmore to raise their family and continue the farming tradition.

Don farmed alongside his father John and later his son Curtis. Together they spent many years grain and cattle farming, sharing stories around the dinner table about the adventures of farm life. Don thoroughly enjoyed running with their three children to their many activities and sports, including hockey, ringette, and baseball.

Don had a deep appreciation for nature and wildlife and especially had a love for dogs. He enjoyed vegetable gardening and turning the fruits of his labour into many delicious meals. He loved and adored his grandchildren and travelled far and wide to cheer them on in sports and celebrate their scholastic achievements. He was immensely proud of the fine adults they became.

Don treasured time spent with friends and valued neighbours, gatherings that were always filled with uproarious laughter and countless stories. A lifelong reader, he could often be found with his nose buried in history books whenever he had a quiet moment.

His infectious laugh, warm heart, and gift for storytelling will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
