The core beliefs and strong family values, which Ben lived by, were forged in his humble beginnings.  He was the fourth of 10 children in a farm setting in the Benson area.  Any references he made to those days, illustrated how proud and happy he was to have had that loving upbringing.  Naturally, in that environment, the “Good-Of-The-Family” was a priority, and often times the older siblings would have to help the younger ones, as they all pitched in and worked towards the family aim.  This is where strong work ethics were developed in all the children.

In adulthood, when Ben had kids of his own, he was a noted hard worker.  He was willing and capable of working long, long hours; often holding two jobs at a time.  Eventually, Ben’s “sideline” business, as a sanitation truck operator, had grown to the point where he needed to make it his sole occupation.  This move didn’t seem to come with any less hours however.  Good thing for Ben, he loved working hard and long.  Ben loved people, and people loved him back.  He was the unassuming man-about-town who everybody knew. Much of his appeal was in his playful nature.  Why give a boring straight answer, when a smart-alec response could do the trick?  And….he loved receiving a witty answer back. Ben was a proud member of the Elks Club, as well as a standard fixture at Weyburn’s curling and golf clubs.  He enjoyed tv sports (especially Roughies, Jays & Leafs).  Music was another love of his, especially Johnny Cash. Ben loved partying.  Often he, his 6-string and his “close-enough“ lyrics were the life of the party. An impromptu performer such as that already possesses an element of “cool” that not every strummer has.

Two Benisms; 1.) a beer is good for the circulation, a shot of whiskey is good for the heart, a shot of drambuie is good for digestion and a shot of “Red, Red, Wine”, cuz it makes the grandkids giggle when I sing it. [Then it gets pointed out to Ben that it’s not even noon yet!]  2.) As a sought after lead in curling circles, his philosophy as lead was, “throw 2, sweep 6, keep your mouth shut”.

The main loves of Ben’s life were his wife of 66 years, Sylvia,  And his children, grandchildren & great- grandchildren.    “For-The-Good-Of-The-Family” rang true throughout his long life.
