Viola Mitchell Obituary

Viola May Mitchell, late of Weyburn, SK passed away on March 8, 2019 at the age of 94 years. 

Viola was predeceased by her husband Bruce Mitchell in 1997 after 54 years of marriage; sisters: Joy Leitch and Carol Fedyk; brother Leonard; sister-in-law Inga Crosby; and sons-in-law Lloyd Howden and Sam Kowalko.

She is survived by her four children: Janice Howden, Saskatoon, SK, Wayne (Marlene) Mitchell, Regina, SK, Esther Kowalko, Campbell River, BC, and Lucy (Ken) Sorsdahl, Coalhurst, AB; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters: Beverly Chow, Sherwood Park, AB and Shirley Kayter, Regina, SK; two brothers: Elliot Crosby (Marlene), Kelowna, BC and Douglas Crosby, Regina, SK; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. 

Viola was born on May 2, 1924 to Mary and Lloyd Crosby of Expanse, SK.  Viola attended Normal School in Moose Jaw, SK before marrying RCAF Corporal Bruce Mitchell on January 1, 1943.

Bruce and Viola owned and operated a farm at Osage, SK until they moved to Weyburn in 1995.  Mum was known for her huge vegetable garden, prize winning homemade bread and her beautiful flower beds.  Mum sewed everything on her Singer Treadle sewing machine, crafted many handmade quilts, knitted slippers and mittens, embroidered tea towels and pillow cases.  She was a member of the Osage United Church Women's group and the Weyburn Crocus Quilters Guild.  Until recently, Mum enjoyed the many social activities including bingo, cribbage and visiting with her many friends at Legion Towers, where she lived for seven years.

She will always be remembered for her positive outlook on life, her emotional strength and her great sense of humor.

A Service of Remembrance for family and close friends was held Saturday, April 13, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. from RD Family Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, SK with Rev. Dr. William Crosby officiating. Interment was held at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn, SK.

In lieu of flowers, for family and friends so wishing, charitable donations in memory of Viola may be made to the  Regina Cancer Patient Lodge, 4104 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, SK, S4T 1A3 or the Palliative Care Team, c/o SHA, Box 2003, Weyburn, SK, S4H 2Z9.
