Joan Whitrow Obituary

Joan Dolores Whitrow, late of Weyburn, SK passed away on March 23, 2024 at the age of 83 years.

She was predeceased by her parents, Reg and Florence Hockley; her brothers, Garry and Dale Hockley; sister Elizabeth Barmby; brothers-in-law: Tyke Whitrow, Poose Whitrow, Bud Whitrow, Don Whitrow, Ken Wood and Clayton Toovey; her sisters-in-law Iris Whitrow, Velma Toovey and Marilyn Whitrow.

Joan is survived by her husband Joe; her children: Bernina Whitrow, Debbie (Garry) Obst and Dennis Whitrow; grandchildren, Leah Whitrow and Aaron (Reegan) Obst; sisters-in-law: Isabel Whitrow, Sue Wood, Edna Whitrow and Myrna Hockley; brother-in-law Don Barmby; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Joan was born on February 26, 1941 to Reg and Florence Hockley. For most of her childhood she lived in Lang with her parents and 3 siblings, however the family moved from Lang to Delia, Alberta for a few years returning to Lang when Joan was in 7th grade.  After high school Joan moved to Regina and went to work at the RBC bank.  During this time she started dating Joe Whitrow and the couple were married on February 24, 1962 making their home in Yellow Grass.  Together they raised 3 children and when the children were all in school Joan returned to work at the local restaurant as a cook for a short period of time until she got a job at the CIBC which is where she worked until she retired in 1998.

Joan was always willing to help out whenever anyone needed a hand.  She helped coach girls slow pitch in town and was an active member of the United Church Marigold club, helping to plan and support church events.  Family and friends were at the heart of Joan’s world and she was in her happy place when she was surrounded by those she loved.  If you were in the neighborhood and stopped in at the Whitrow’s you were always welcome and would be offered a cup of coffee along with plenty of conversations and laughter.  Gatherings were common and held often at the Whitrow’s.

Joan had many hobbies and interests through her life; she loved to garden, enjoyed baking, building puzzles, doing her needlework, playing cards and games, listening to music (country and gospel) and going for car rides with Joe.  Together Joe and Joan shared many adventures and travelled many miles side by side in the car or in the big truck during Joe’s trucking days.  Joe and Joan moved to Weyburn in 2011 and continued to keep busy staying connected with family and friends.  In November 2022 Joan moved to Weyburn Special Care Home where she lived until her passing. Joan will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.

Joan’s family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at the Weyburn Special Care Home for the kind and compassionate care she received.
