Sam Locken, late of Weyburn, SK passed away November 28, 2012, at the age of 85 years. Sam was predeceased by his parents: Lars and Randie (nee Paulhus) Locken; sister Bernice Steen; brother: Henry Locken brothers-in-law: Irwin Steen, George Price and Norm Arsenault.

Sam is survived by his wife: Beverly, his four children:Jacqueline (Chester) McDonald, Dallas (Lori) Locken, Marlys (Raymond) Kuntz, Deanna (Scott) Knight; grandchildren: Lance (Kim) Locken, Dale Locken (Tammy Strom), Rae Ann (Jeremy) Zubiak, Jerod Kuntz (Grace Lyttle), Brenden Kuntz (Kayla Hill), Sam Knight, Andrew Knight; great grandchildren: Kylan and Cameron Locken as well as numerous special nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.

Selmer (Sam) Locken was the fourth child born to Randi and Lars Locken.  Sam was born at home on August 30th, 1927.  He was baptized and confirmed at the Oslo Lutheran Church in North Dakota.  Sam worked hard and played hard.  He was a man of great spirit and he loved a good laugh.  He farmed while living on his parents home place.  In the winter, after a hard days work, he and his cousin Milo Paulhus were known to hitch up a horse and took turns riding and skiing behind the horse cross country (5 miles) to Ratcliffe to a dance.

In July of 1954 he fell in love and married Beverly Roysum.  They moved to the Olie Erkie farm where they brought their first daughter Jacqueline home; they lived there for three years before moving to Weyburn.  Sam worked for Rosselin trucking hauling gravel for the department of highways.  Sam eventually bought his own truck while working at Rosselin Trucking.  It was during this time that son Dallas and daughter Marlys were born.

In 1962 Sam and Bev bought his father Lar’s farm.  They moved to the farm and this is where they welcomed their last child Deanna.  These were busy years; farming, raising their family, keeping beef cattle and for a brief time hogs.  Sam also did lots of carpentry for people in the area; cabinetry being a specialty.  Before power tools he sawed and drilled everything by hand.  Sam was very committed to his community and was involved in many ways:  He was treasurer of the community owned telephone company; President of Radcliffe Hall Board; Member of the Radville School Board; Trustee on the board of Oungre United Church; Charter member of the Elks.  He had given up skiing behind a horse by then, but spent many a frigid winter morning getting area kids to school by traversing across snow covered fields in a Bombardier for the school district.  Curling was a winter pass time he enjoyed for many years.  They continued to farm long after their family was on their own; the grand children have memories of their grandparents on the farm.  They wintered down south for a couple years and in 1994 bought a home in Weyburn.  They spent many happy years there before moving to a condo in 2012.

To sum Sam up in a few words is hard; he loved: his family, his friends, a good joke, to laugh out loud, playing cards, curling, cutting and styling his young grandson’s hair, and dancing to good old time music.  He was quick of wit and had the penmanship of a calligrapher but mostly he had a family that loved him.  He will be missed beyond words.

A visitation was held on Sunday, December 2, 2012 at 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm from RD Family Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, SK.  Funeral service was held on Monday, December 3, 2012 at 2:00 pm from Grace United Church, Weyburn, SK with Rev. M. Barnabas, officiating. A private family interment was held at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn, SK.  Pallbearers were his grandchildren: Lance Locken, Dale Locken, Rae Ann Zubiak, Jerod Kuntz   Brenden Kuntz, Sam Knight and Andrew Knight.

For family and friends so wishing, donations in memory of Sam may be made to Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation Inc., Box 1416, Weyburn, SK, S4H 3J9 or Grace United Church Memorial Fund, 210 3rd St NE, Weyburn, SK, S4H 0W6
