Welcome to the memorial page for

Florence Ruby Johnston

April 19, 2017

It is with great sadness that Florence Ruby Johnston's (Schmidt) family announces her passing at the age of 89 following a brief battle with cancer.

Florence was predeceased by her parents: Emma and Herman Schmidt; her first husband Milton Johnson; brothers: Floyd, Edward and Leonard Schmidt; sisters: Christina (in infancy), Gladys (Forseyth), Ella (Harris), Eva (Comstock) and Mary (Achen); her second husband Orville Johnston.

Florence is survived by her brother Howard (Lauretta) Schmidt; her children and grandchildren: Danton (Joanne) and sons Zachary (Kylie) and Brooks (Megan), and Glenda (Coe) Patton and son Justin; as well numerous nieces and nephews.

Born November 15, 1927 in Midale, SK, Florence enjoyed the best of family and community, taking care of her mother after her father's passing, until her death at the age of 95.  She was a dedicated homemaker and caregiver to all she touched - her family and her pets.  Her love of music and dancing kept her active in her retirement, often attending weekly senior's dances in Weyburn. She loved being outdoors and spent many quality hours in her yard with her garden and her flowers.  She enjoyed social gatherings with family and friends and was a formidable card player, teaching her children and grandchildren the finer points of Contract Rummy or Hand & Foot Canasta.  The candy dish was always stocked and the "lecherbistien"  cabinet was always filled with something to satisfy the urge to snack.

Florence was an avid Weyburn Redwings fan, holding a season ticket for more than 25 years.  She was even known to make a few catcalls from her seat behind the Redwings player's bench in support of her beloved Wings.  When her eyesight failed and she could no longer see the game, she followed the play by play on the radio and the team's progress through media updates.

As was Florence's wish, a Private Family Interment was held at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn, SK.

A Memorial Tea was held  Monday, April 24, 2017 at 1:00pm from  the Wheatland Senior Centre,  888 1st Avenue, N.E. Weyburn, SK.

In lieu of flowers, for family and friends so wishing, charitable donations in Florence's memory may be made to the Weyburn Humane Society, P.O. Box 1062, Weyburn, SK, S4H 2L3.
